What I have learnt
By doing the research for this task, it has allowed me to understand more about how music video has developed from the 60s until now and how they helped advertise the music. There are significant differences between the music videos. The music videos from the past have more narrative and they use less technology, but various camera techniques instead. By illustrating a narrative, the interpretation of the music can be easily understood since visual information helps audience to understand better. Furthermore, the use of various camera techniques adds variations which made the music video more engaging for the audience. Making the audience engaged can help the artist to reach out and gain more audience which can lead to their music getting more recognised and become popular.
However, the techniques used by present music artists are different. As the technology develops overtime, music artists took the advantage from this to use more editing technology in their music video. They can create effects that couldn't be recorded manually, as well as it is cheaper to do digital edit rather than providing different type of equipment and props for the filming. They also reflect their music in their music video by using more performance concept instead of narrative. This may also reflect how they becoming more modern since narrative concept are seen as old for most people. With this, I believe it interest younger audience more than older audience that often prefer music video that has meaning or reflect the music better, than performance based music video. So, it depends on how the artist wants to advertise their music to what type of audience base.
